Now let’s analyze each and every aspect of these two SEO tools and give 10 points for every aspect (both tool get 5 point when tied). And lastly, I will sum up the total mark and announce the winner.
Here I will discuss these 11 things both of these SEO tools.
- Domain overview

- Backlink analysis
- Broken link analysis
- Additional features
- Ease of use
- Pricing and
- Support

So let’s start with domain overview of both these SEO tools – SEMrush and Ahref.
Domain Analysis of SEMrush vs Ahrefs
Domain overview means a quick overview of your competitor’s domain or your domain. It shows how a website performs on the search engine. Both of these tools have made a great job here.
Here you will get an instant and complete overview of your competitors like your competitor’s search traffic, paid search traffic, backlinks, display advertising, keywords by country, traffic trend, and other information.
Simply enter your domain or your competitor’s domain. You can check your domain to see how you doing on the search engine and where you should make improvements.
Or enter your competitor’s domain to get a closer look at how difficult the task will be to outrank your competitors and make your website a better one.
Both of these tools have done a great job in this aspect.
When you analyze a domain in both of these tools you will see these key metrics on both tools.
Common Matrics of SEMrush and Ahref on Domain Analysis
- Domain authority score: The more the better. As you can see a higher domain authority website has extra chances to rank on the first page of Google search results.
- Total monthly visitors: How many people visit the website per month.
- Backlinks: Shows the total number of external links on a website. If a website has many backlinks it’s really good from the SEO point of view.
- Total keywords: For those keywords, the website ranks for.
- Anchor text: Shows the total number of anchor text used in external links to the website.
- Organic competitor: According to the website keywords.
The process of domain analysis in SEMrush and Ahrefs is not so much different. If you are a newbie then it will be easy to use in Ahrefs.
When you are on Ahrefs dashboard basically on “site explorer” you see the navigation menu on the left-hand side of the screen. Here you can easily navigate through backlinks, referring domains, internal backlinks, competing domains, organic keywords, etc.

When you do the same thing with SEMrush you get some extra tab under competitive research. And its very good to know that SEMrush divided its whole tools into subcategories that are really handy.

In the competitive research section there sits 4 different sections that help to clear analysis a domain.
On Ahrefs there’s an extra option which is a domain top page. It shows those pages of a domain that drives most of the traffic.
Additionally, on SEMrush there is a unique feature that you do not find on Ahrefs and that is “competitive positioning map”.
This is really a very helpful feature of the SEMrush tool that gives you an at a glance look on how a website is doing against its key competitors, by calculating how many keywords it ranks for and monthly traffic.

Importantly, both tools give almost accurate data on monthly search traffic.
Who Should Be the Winner on the Aspect of Domain Analysis – SEMrush or Ahrefs?
So, now I will sum up my words on SEMrush and Ahrefs domain analysis section.
Tools & Features | SEMrush | Ahrefs |
---|---|---|
Competitive positioning map | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
Domain’s top pages | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
Mobile SERP ranking | ✅Yes | ❌ No |
Comparison of keyword profile for PLA keywords | ✅ Yes | ❌No |
Side by side domain comparison between keywords profile | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
As you can see here, according to your opinion which one should be the winner?
Yes, you are right SEMrush is the clear winner here.
Because SEMrush gives its users some extra benefit that is mobile SERP rankings and PLA keyword research. Among them, mobile SERP is the most important thing. Why?
The reason is smartphone is getting more available and everyone uses his/her smartphone mostly to browse or entertain himself or herself. Therefore, it’s very very important for a blogger or marketer to know the mobile SERP rankings.
As a result, I’d give SEMrush a winner on the aspect of domain analysis.
Winner: SEMrush
After talking a lot about SEMrush and Ahrefs domain analysis now it’s time to talk about Keyword research.
Keyword Research Features of SEMrush vs Ahrefs
How successful or unsuccessful a website will be it depends entirely on keyword research. Because if you target the wrong keywords you will not get any benefit from it, despite you work hard for it.
So, it’s the most important thing for a blogger, YouTuber, or marketer to choose the right keyword for their niche.
When it comes to keyword research on paid SEO tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs, both of these tools gives the exact information you need which are:

- Monthly search volume: How many people search for the keyword term. Both tools show particular country volume and global volume.
- Keyword Difficulty: It defines how difficult it will be to rank the first page on Google for this Keyword.
- CPC: It also an important part of keyword research to know how much you will be paid for each click by the advertiser.
- Competition: If you are a marketer then this information is also very very important for you. Unfortunately, this feature is only available for SEMrush.
- Already ranked pages: To check out why those websites rank on the first page of Google.
- Keyword suggestions: Both SEMrush and Ahrefs done a great job here providing phrase match keywords, related keywords, etc.
Keyword research process on SEMrush and Ahrefs are pretty similar and easy to use.
For this simply you have to search for a keyword on SEMrush “keyword overview” tab and “Keyword explorer” tab on Ahrefs and you will easily get all the needed information such as search volume, keyword difficulty, CPC, competition, keyword Suggestions and currently ranked pages.

On SEMrush it calculates keyword Difficulty on percentage. The higher percentage means very different to rank on the first page of Google. Whereas Ahrefs do the same work using a score between 0 to hundred. Here also a higher score indicates difficult to rank.
You can create a Keyword list both on SEMrush and Ahrefs. It’s called keyword manager on SEMrush and Keyword list on Ahrefs.
If I talk for keyword suggestions then both SEMrush and Ahrefs are great.
In the case of backlinks suggestions Ahrefs has done better because when you search for your cherished keyword, Ahrefs shows how much backlinks you have to create to rank on the first page of the search engine. That’s really cool. In this case, if we talk about SEMrush then you have to click some extra to find out how many backlinks you need. However, Ahrefs makes the process easy.

On SEMrush there’s also a good feature which is keyword Difficulty percentage. SEMrush shows the exact and correct estimate of keyword Difficulty. It shows two digits after the decimal point. And it’s very very useful when you are working on an ultra-competitive niche.

And another thing is you can see how much people clicks on the keyword they search for on Ahrefs it’s called click rate. That really helps content publishers to identify if they will get visitors using this Keyword.
Moreover, Ahrefs gives its users to use various search engines like Google, YouTube, Yahoo, Bing, etc almost 10 search engines.
I personally think that almost everyone uses Google to get information. As a result, I think SEMrush paid attention only to Google because the majority of searches are still performed on Google around 92% and that’s why SEMrush has a bigger database of keywords than Ahrefs.
However, if you are searching for both organic searches and PPC then SEMrush is the king in this field.
Because SEMrush provides a detailed CPC competition as well as live ads. You can use these amazing features on PPC campaigns.
However, both SEMrush and Ahrefs are good enough in the keyword research aspect. To clarify, Ahrefs gives at a glance information and options to use other search engines. And you want to be the king on both organic searches and PPC campaigns then SEMrush is the only option for you.
So, I have described almost each and every aspect of both SEMrush and Ahrefs. Now it’s time to make a decision who is the winner on the keyword research aspect.
Who Is the Winner in the Keyword Research Aspect – SEMrush or Ahrefs?
Now I will sum up, my all words. What do you think about who should be the winner here?

Considering all of these things I announce that both of these tools are winners here. Actually this is a tie.
As a result, both tools will get 5 points here.

After talking about keyword research it times to talk about technical SEO audit. So, let’s see how these tools perform in the aspect of technical SEO audit.
Technical Site Audit of SEMrush vs Ahrefs
Technical SEO is also an important thing in order to get higher rankings on Google. Sometimes our website has some issues that we don’t notice well. And this can be one of the reasons why our website is not ranking. As a result, I added a technical SEO audit to one of the comparison aspects.
Technical SEO means optimizing, indexing, crawling and rendering our website properly.
One of the most important things for better ranking on Google is site load time or page speed, in 2020 speed effects a lot for ranking that can be fixed by a technical SEO audit. Because it crawls each and every page of your website and shows the data, which page has load time issues.
Moreover, a technical SEO audit also scans your website structure, SSL certificate, your website sitemap, and more to fix it.
Both SEMrush and Ahrefs Scan These Problems
- Problems on HTML
- Title tag problem (Too long or too much short)
- Meta description problem
- Image problem
- Broken links etc
Both of these tools help you to identify these problems and their solution. You just simply check your website problems and fix them for better ranking.
So, let’s see which SEO tools help you most to tackle these problems easily and choose the right SEO tool for you.
On SEMrush you get really easy to use technical SEO audit tool. When you scan your website on SEMrush site auditing it crawls every page of your site and shows the overall SEO score with some errors, warnings, and notices.

It recommends solving these problems to get better ranking on Google.
Here you will see HTML ratio error, heading tags errors, meta description errors, and image problems. Moreover, SEMrush test 130 or more technical SEO issues.
It also tells you how many issues are there on a particular page and their priority level and ways to solve these problems too.
SEMrush shows an overall SEO score of your site out of hundred. In order to improve your search ranking solve these errors which hinder your website from being on search results.
To do a technical SEO audit on SEMrush is really easy, fast, and accurate. To do this on SEMrush first add your domain from the SEMrush project tab on the button left-hand side.
Now let’s see how it works on Ahrefs. To clarify, site auditing is a new feature on Ahrefs that recently added. We got that Ahrefs scan almost 100 or more problems of your website. And shows an overall SEO score with errors and warnings.
In addition, on Ahrefs there’s a problem, it takes a long time to generate your website SEO score and to show the errors and warnings.

Even your website is not so big though it takes several hours to accomplish the task. When the whole process is finished then Ahrefs send an email to the user. It’s too much annoying.
To use this tool on Ahrefs go to your dashboard under site audit create a new project.
Which Tool Should Be the Winner on Technical SEO Audit – SEMrush or Ahrefs
As you see all the information here It goes without saying that SEMrush is the clear winner here.
Also take a look at this.
Tools & Features | SEMrush | Ahrefs |
---|---|---|
JavaScript rendering | ✅ No | ❌ Yes |
Here’s a little bit more from SEMrush that there is no JavaScript rendering when you scan the website on-site audit tool. That means your website load time will not be affected.
Whereas Ahrefs uses JavaScript rendering to track your website that will affect your website load time.
However, Ahrefs also has done an admirable job here. But it takes too much time to generate results. Ahrefs also provides mostly accurate results.
Whereas SEMrush’s technical SEO auditing tool is really very handy, accurate with some extra benefits.
As a result, SEMrush is the winner in terms of technical SEO auditing.
Winner: SEMrush
So, now let’s take a look at position tracking of both of these SEO tools as our sitemap.
Position Tracking Features of SEMrush vs Ahrefs
Position tracking means the position of your website for a particular keyword on search results. On Google webmaster tool shows some data but it is not enough.
To get a clear idea and to see Improvement and deterioration of your website for a particular keyword you can track your keyword by SEMrush or Ahrefs SEO tool. To clarify, both of these tools have position tracking features. And the feature shows mostly
- Position
- Estimated traffic
- Visibility
As I already described what is position tracking, let’s see from which tool – SEMrush or Ahrefs – you get the best benefit.
To track your keywords on SEMrush first create a project and set up position tracking. SEMrush can track all of your targeted keywords as their plan.
SEMrush can track your keywords on any location and any devices like mobile, desktop, or tablet.
Specifically, to track your keywords, first choose the location, and then select a device from mobile, desktop or tablet as you wish.
On SEMrush it shows – position, estimated traffic, and visibility – these three matrics for your added keyword.

The graph shows how your keywords are performing on Search results. A green plus icon will appear when the keyword moves forward such as from page 2 to page 1. It also shows when the search ranking goes down for your added keywords.
You can also see your keywords tracking reports and it’s possible changes.
On Ahrefs it also does the same work as SEMrush. Ahrefs tracks your keywords for selected locations and devices.
To use the posting tracking feature on Ahrefs first add your project (your domain). When adding your website there you will find an option to add your targeted keywords as well as your competitors. You can add up to 5 competitors to get a clear view of your search ranking improvements and decrease of ranking.

Ahrefs also get you to know your search ranking improvements when it occurs by email notification. You can set this up from settings.
I described almost everything about SEMrush and Ahrefs position tracking features. Now it is the time to look at which tool will work best for you.
Which Position Tracking Tool Will Be Best for You
As I told, both SEMrush and Ahrefs has done an admirable job on position tracking features. Both these tools can track keywords and let you know how your site is doing on search results. You get clear and in-depth reports as well as the most accurate data both on SEMrush and in Ahrefs.

Winner: Tied
Now let’s talk about backlink analysis of both SEMrush and Ahrefs tools
Backlink Analysis of SEMrush and Ahrefs
You know domain authority is one of the most important ranking factors. And it is built by linking to each other’s website. Domain authority mostly calculated by how many websites link to your website.
As a result, to make backlinks and improve your search DR it’s very very important to do proper backlink analysis.
If your webpage has more backlinks than your competitors then there’s an extra chance to rank for.
To clarify, both SEMrush and Ahrefs has these amazing features. To get to Know a website backlink simply enter the website URL on SEMrush or Ahrefs and it comebacks with a huge list.
On SEMrush, there’s a huge database of the domain which is bigger than Ahrefs. SEMrush has 790 million domains of database whereas Ahrefs has 171 million domains database. In this case, SEMrush will go one stage further.

As a result, SEMrush users get a more comprehensive and in-depth backlink analysis.
When you do backlink analysis you will see more backlink on SEMrush because it has a bigger database. But Ahrefs also not too bad.
From both of these tools, you can perform basic backlink analysis. SEMrush and Ahrefs provide you with this useful information:
- Do follow vs no-follow: Shows the total number of do-follow and no-follow backlinks.
- Backlinks origin country

Link Intersect Features on SEMrush
Both on SEMrush and Ahrefs has link intersect features. This means you can perform a task to see which domains are linked with your competitors but not linked to you.
On SEMrush, you can compare your site’s backlink with 4 others, on the other hand, on Ahrefs you can perform this task with 3 domains.

You find SEMrush, easy to use on backlink analysis. Because it displays useful information through graphs that really help a person, easily understand.
You also get some extra features on SEMrush in the backlink point of view. But you don’t get any extra features on Ahrefs like SEMrush.
Among from extra features of SEMrush backlink auditing is very very important. Because some spammers or often some bad person create an inappropriate backlink from an inappropriate website that’s called toxic backlinks on SEMrush backlink auditing tools.
Moreover, if Google sees spammy links to your website that can lead your website penalized in search results. Which should never be allowed to happen.
But now you don’t have to worry about it because on SEMrush, you can easily find out these kinds of backlinks and send the list to Google disavow file.
As a result, you have to chance of being penalized from Google search results. Because Google will ignore these toxic backlinks.

SEMrush offers amazing features, link-building tool. It’s not available on Ahrefs. When you analyze your website on SEMrush creating a project that time SEMrush also scans for those websites from where you ask them to link to your website too and make backlinks.

On the backlink audit tool, you see a tab called link building check on it. SEMrush already created a list from these websites you ask for a backlink.
To send them an email, select some of the prospects and click on move to in progress. Then you have to set up your email option. You can use your Gmail or Yahoo mail.

Then collect those websites’ emails and send email them. (You can use hunter.io extension for chrome to collect email address)
I have mentioned each and everything that SEMrush and Ahrefs provides.
Now it’s time to declare the winner of the backing analysis aspect.
Which Tool Should Be the Winner on Backlink Analysis
Now, let me sum up, features of SEMrush and Ahrefs backlinks analysis.
Tools & Features | SEMrush | Ahrefs |
---|---|---|
Toxic backlink checker | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
Link building tool | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
Integration of Google Analytics and GSC | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
Outgoing links | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
Both SEMrush and Ahrefs provide you admirable backlink analysis tools. But as you can see above, SEMrush is the clear winner here. SEMrush not only provides more database of domains (backlinks) but also offers two amazing features – link building tool and toxic link checker tool. That’s really cool.
Winner: SEMrush
After talking about backlink analysis now it’s time to talk about broken link analysis.
Broken Link Analysis of SEMrush vs Ahrefs
When it comes to broken links then I see the chance to get my website backlinks from those websites that have broken links.
As a result, broken link building is also an important thing in terms of SEO. Because it makes your links.
These tools help you to make find and broken links then you have to create a Powerful content point the dead backlink and ask the admin to link to your website instead.
In this way, you can make more backlinks and improve your search rankings.
To clarify that, both these SEO tools has made a great job of broken link analysis. To do the analysis, simply enter the domain name on the site explorer in Ahrefs. Then it will come back with a list of broken links for you.
On SEMrush the broken link analysis feature is under site audit tool.

When checking other website broken links it’s also very much important to check your website broken links too. (If there’s any)
If your website contains broken outbound links it gives a signal to search engine that your content is not good enough.
So, to avoid this kind of interruption you must perform a broken link analysis.
This task is very easy on Ahrefs but on SEMrush you have to perform a full site audit to get broken outbound links report.

As per the description which should be the winner here?
SEMrush vs Ahrefs: Which Tool Should Be the Winner on Broken Link Analysis?
Though both tools perform a good job here. But Ahrefs makes this process quite easy. As a result, Ahrefs is the winner here.
Winner: Ahrefs
I almost talk about the most useful features of both of these SEO tools. Now, it’s time to talk about some extra features that these tools provide.
SEMrush vs Ahrefs: Additional Features
SEMrush and Ahrefs both are still working on new features and make improvements to it’s existing features. So, if I talk about extra features SEMrush has done a great job here. When you are on the SEMrush’s dashboard you will see a lot of features that are not present in Ahrefs.
Moreover, Ahrefs has also some useful features that are not on SEMrush, clicks – how many people search the keyboards – Among them how many people click on the organic search results. And another thing is you get some extra Search engine opinions though most of the people use Google ask to learn their quarries.
Basically these features:

Basically you get there more features on SEMrush:

What do you thinking which tool you should give a thumbs up? I think it’s SEMrush.
So, as per this description, SEMrush is the clear winner on additional features.
Winner: SEMrush
SEMrush vs Ahrefs: Ease of Use
To clarify, If a tool has a little more features then it is normal to have a little trouble using it. My personal opinion is as Ahrefs has not extra features like SEMrush, as a result, Ahrefs is a little bit easy to use.
But it doesn’t mean that SEMrush is very different to use. From my personal experience, I can say that you should take a maximum of 3 to 4 days to get accustomed to the SEMrush SEO tool, and then you love it, as I.
On Ahrefs, you get at a glance look on SEO information and its menu is easily accessible.
You can do the same task on SEMrush but it seems that you have to click some extra time as on Ahrefs.
But that’s not a big deal. After getting familiar to SEMrush you will get more features, more database, more keyword ideas, etc.
Both of these tools are great for SEO. On SEMrush you get some extra features – link building tool, SEO writing assistant. SEMrush link building tool is really great and it is only available on SEMrush. You can directly contact other website owners and ask them for a backlink.
So, now it’s time to see who does a better job here.
Which Tool Should Win on Ease of Use Aspect
As I already said in the article that Ahrefs is very simple but doesn’t show PPC data. So, in this aspect, I will give Ahrefs a bit of win here. But if you want to get traffic both the organic and by PPC campaigns then SEMrush is the best option for you.
Winner: Ahrefs
So, as I described everything now it’s time to talk about the pricing of both SEMrush and Ahrefs.
SEMrush vs Ahrefs: Pricing and Value for Money
Pricing is the most important thing for you and me. If any tool provides more features and costs low then you should definitely try out the tools.
Both SEMrush and Ahrefs is almost similar On pricing plan. There’s no huge difference between these two tools.

But there’s no tool on Ahrefs to get you PPC campaign data.

Reports Per Day on SEMrush and Ahrefs
It’s also important to analyze domains and keywords and take reports.
On SEMrush you get 3,000 domain analysis reports per day but on Ahrefs you get 25 domain analysis reports per day.
Moreover, on the SEMrush business plan, you get the opportunity to get reports 10,000 daily. Whereas on Ahrefs you get 250 reports per day on Ahrefs standard plan that both costs $399 per month.
So, in this case, SEMrush will go one step further.
Now let’s talk about social media management.
Social Media Management Tool
If you get traffic from social, it gives a signal on Google that your website is getting viral on social media. Really it greatly helps a site to rank higher on search results.

There are many tools in the market to manage your social profiles like Hootsuite, which costs $29 to $599.
But on SEMrush you will get the social media management tool include on every plan.
You can monitor up to 50 social profiles on the SEMrush pro plan. That’s sounds amazing.
But unfortunately, there’s no such tool on Ahrefs to compare.
So, SEMrush is the only option for you if you want to manage all of your social profiles in one place.
So, here SEMrush will go two steps further.
Which Tool Should Be the Best Value for Money?
As I have described each and everything here. Which tool should be the winner? Both the tool has done a decent job here but SEMrush is the winner here undoubtedly.
Winner: SEMrush
So far SEMrush is ahead in this comparison.
